I moved down to Houston Texas after taking a Computer Engineering job with Compaq Computer Corporation.  I immediately put down some cash and bought a MIDI card, a Roland D20 keyboard, Yamaha Piano rack module,  some good Neodymium microphones, an 8-Track recorder and began laying down some tracks.  I did these in my town-house in Houston, TX

Lou Gagliardi: I tried several times to sing this one.  Even in my youth, this was just about a minor third beyond my range.  I developed a heightened respect for Michael MacDonald's range after attempting this.  So, I did the lead-line with synth.  What the heck.

Lou Gagliardi:  similar arrangement we did in the basement in Lombard, Il which included a bass solo ( I did on the keyboard and recorded with Midi).  I used a "multing" technique that I learned at Solid Sound Studios near Chicago for the vocals and played a rhythm guitar track on the big fat Howard Roberts hollow body.

When I started work at Compaq in June of 1988, a few folks told me to go meet Al Givens.  I told them I played music and they knew Al was a musician.  Finally, Roland Horstman introduced us and I told Al I was just doing some tracks in my living room and was working on "Home at Last" by Steely Dan and I didn't know how I was going to do the Guitar solo.  Al said, "I think I know that solo."  Within a few days, I was over at Al's house and set up the 8-track.  Al did this guitar track on the first take.  He didn't want to try it again because he didn't think he could do it any better.  I agree...  I don't think anyone could do it better.  I wish I had made the guitar track a little louder in the final mix...  Later, Al hooked me up with some of his good friends (Richard Segura and Phil Nelson) and we formed the band "Heat Xchange" and played inside the loop in Houston for more than a year.  See the Heat Xchange page to listen to a show we did at the Waves Beach Bar and Grill on Westheimer.  Al, I miss you, my friend.

I did this with a primary influence of Maynard.  I sort-of winged it though.  No form sheet, just played.  Kind of crazy at the end.

I wanted to do a Todd Rundgren tune.
